James Klotter Chapter student founder and Allen C. Guelzo Chair of History Austin Justice is expected to give a public lecture in his hometown of Pikeville, Kentucky.
Entitled Mystic Chords of Memory: Origins of the Confederate Lost Cause, this talk is to be presented at the Pikeville-Pike County Museum & Big Sandy Heritage Center on the Courthouse Complex in downtown Pikeville. Austin is also the museum's volunteer specialist in its Civil War Era exhibit. His presentation aims to uncover the origins of the Lost Cause mythology, an ideological/literary movement which took form in the aftermath of Appomattox. The Lost Cause, which remains deeply embedded in the minds of many, is a sectionalist attempt at honorably explaining why the Confederacy lost the war as well as its reasons for going to war.
What's more, Austin was recently selected as one of the nation's Lincoln Forum Student Scholars. He will be on scholarship attending the 2015 Lincoln Forum Symposium in Gettysburg, PA in November. The conference will be televised.
We encourage all Klotter members to make their way to the lecture and tour the museum if possible. Information regarding dates, times, and potential admission fees are to follow soon.
