The Teacher Center's Clark Teaching Award is named in memory of Thomas D. Clark (1903-2005).
Clark was born in a log cabin in rural Mississippi, where he interacted with people who had lived our nation's defining history -- from Confederate veterans to former slaves. Attending the University of Mississippi, Clark cultivated his determination to follow the historian's path. He went on to study at the University of Kentucky and Duke University. Eventually joining the faculty at UK, Clark almost single-handedly grew the history program into a premier center for Southern studies. He came to be loved by colleagues and students alike as a scholar, educator, and preservationist who halted the destruction of our state's printed history in Frankfort. JKC's Clark Teaching Award Laureates are similarly loved & devoted to the task of humanities education. |
