Minimum Barriers Initiative

James Klotter Chapter
Minimum Barriers Initiative

James Klotter Chapter is proud to present our Minimum Barriers Initiative. This progressive program is unique to JKC -- it currently does not exist at any other Rho Kappa chapter. Launched in Spring 2016, the MBI allows us to strive for inclusiveness rather than petty exclusiveness. By tearing down barriers to membership & involvement, we are able to bring the humanities to the entire BCHS community. Find out exactly how below.

BCHS History Club

In accordance with the National Council for the Social Studies regulations, we are required to bar freshmen, sophomores, and unqualified upperclassmen from Rho Kappa membership. Yet we firmly believe in including every BCHS student in our exploration of the humanities. For this reason, all students who do not presently qualify for RK membership are invited to join the BCHS History Club at no cost! Sponsored by JKC, the HC joins us in all our activities, events, and more.

Deferred Payment Plan

Because all chapters have to pay $5 per new member to the NCSS, JKC asks that new members submit a $5 membership fee. Although a considerably low amount of money, we understand that special circumstances do arise in which an applicant can't obtain the money right away. For this reason, we offer a Deferred Payment Plan: JKC will cover your membership fee initially until you can repay us by the end of the academic year.

One-Semester-Rule Exceptions

Are you a high-achieving junior or senior with a drive for the social studies? Are you also new to BCHS? Ordinarily, this would bar you from membership: the NCSS specifies that RK Scholars must've attended our school for at least one semester. As a benefit of our MBI though, any applicant who does not meet this requirement will have an appeal made to the school administration on their behalf. If the appeal is successful, JKC can legally waive this requirement.

Standard Meeting Inductions

Did you miss our Annual Induction Ceremony due to travel? Submit your application too late? Just transfer to BCHS? No worries. JKC is happy to provide Standard Meeting Inductions. An SMI is an abridged version of the induction ceremony; it can be carried out for new members at a regular meeting anytime throughout the year at no extra cost. For this reason, JKC accepts applications on a rolling basis throughout the year (including the summer)!
